The Runde island holds unique natural value, interesting geology and the only bird cliffs in southern Norway with unique landscapes. The ocean surrounding Runde holds one of the worlds most productive spawning grounds, and both the deep sea and deep fjords are found within short distances. These natural values makes Runde one of the worlds most interesting areas for scientific research . Runde is well known internationally, and is visited by more than 30 000 tourists annually. The Runde Environmental Centre (REC) was established with the purpose of developing an international environment for research and sustainable development.

visitor centre is also located at the REC, where a seabird exhibition and an exhibition of the Runde treasure is found, amongst other things. Currently, work to include knowledge of the ocean, fishery resources and the management of these is conducted.
