The workshop is a first step towards creating long-term collaboration connecting industrial subsea activities available to marine environmental researchers. The idea is to connect scientists from different countries and increase the value of deep-sea science.

This project plan is in line with Runde Environmental Centre’s overall purpose of making marine environmental data available to national and international researchers, as well as supporting regional and national maritime industry.

Optimistic partners

One of the main partners Rune Andersen from Innovation Norway is very optimistic for the workshop.

-This project is already listed to be a priority activity for me in 2017 and has all signs of being a success and open new bilateral with Brazil, Rune Andersen (Counsellor Science and Technology to Brazil)

The workshop

The workshop has important players from academia, public regulators and industries to strength and establish new contacts in a prioritized research area between Brazil and Norway.

Claudia Erber from Runde Environmental Centre is the project manager for the idea for this network. Both Rune Andersen and Claudia Erber agrees that this collaboration is important for Norway and Brazil.

The workshop will be a good opportunity to connect several key personnel to crossover and collaborate for more effective and integrated deep-sea data gathering and analysis, says project manager Claudia Erber (Brazilian marine biologist).

The Workshop in Rio de Janeiro, shall have a strong presence of Brazilian partners from ANP, FINEP, IBAMA, 04 Universities, 02 Technology Research Centers, 09 Environment Consulting Companies and 02 Oil Companies. The event will also feature the participation of Norwegian companies as Havilla Shipping ASA, Olympic Shipping AS and the Blue Maritime Cluster. In addition, Daniel Jones from a British university.

Follow up

It follows on from an earlier pre-study funded by the Regional Research Fund, in which Runde Environmental Centre together with Sintef and Olympic Shipping sought opportunities for scientists to participate during ROV operations in the subsea sector, and explored the need for new sensor technology in subsea operations.

This network will give synergies with ongoing research cooperation and has the potential for further development with the November Conference, organized by Innovation Norway and Finep.
